Shakeup in the West as 49ers Stumble While Rivals Surge

October 27, 2026 • 2 min read

The San Francisco 49ers saw their flawless streak come to a messy end this weekend, falling 29-20 to the Atlanta Falcons. It was a performance defined by uncharacteristic mistakes, featuring three turnovers and a series of defensive penalties during the deciding drive. Despite an early spark from rookie Kaelon Black, who scored his first career touchdown following an injury to Christian McCaffrey, the Niners collapsed under the weight of poor special teams play and costly giveaways. San Francisco now heads into its bye week clinging to a narrow two-game lead in the division, desperate for their star players to return to health.

While San Francisco faltered, the Seattle Seahawks made a loud statement by dismantling the Kansas City Chiefs 20-3 on Sunday Night Football. In a dominant showing, Seattle completely neutralized Patrick Mahomes, holding him without a single red zone visit while Sam Darnold played an efficient game through the air. The victory served as poetic justice for Seattle, especially as former Seahawk Kenneth Walker struggled significantly against his old teammates. However, the win came at a cost, with several key starters leaving the game nursing injuries that could complicate their upcoming matchup against Chicago.

Further south, the Los Angeles Rams climbed out of the divisional cellar with a 35-21 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. Matthew Stafford looked sharp early with three first-half touchdowns, though typical Rams inconsistency crept in during the fourth quarter via fumbles and interceptions. Despite those lapses, Los Angeles managed to hold on and move into third place. Meanwhile, the Arizona Cardinals continued their downward slide with a disappointing 30-16 loss to Denver. Even a standout performance from Trey McBride couldn’t mask a complete failure in the red zone that left Arizona languishing at bottom of the standings.
